Do you clean your chihuahua’s teeth?

The answer is that a surprising amount of chi owners don’t. The reason is often chihuahua temperament. No-one wants to stick their fingers in a grumpy chihuahua’s mouth and risk getting bitten!

They’re not sure how to start the process. What are the best products to buy? Toothbrush or finger brush, natural toothpaste or shop-bought?

If you’re not cleaning your chihuahua’s teeth, the chances are that he is going to need expensive dental treatment later in life. You might be lucky and get away with just a clean and polish; or he could need teeth extracted.

Extractions can lead to hanging tongue syndrome; a condition which can cause a cracked, sore tongue which causes your chihuahua difficulty with drinking & eating.

Dental treatment costs a fortune. In the UK it can start at £380 for a basic clean, plus there is the risk of the general anaesthetic on such a tiny dog. And, not all insurance companies will cover a preventable condition!

In addition to problems in his mouth, you need to know that many major health issues like liver disease, heart disease and strokes have been linked to bacteria from poor oral hygiene.

If you are relying on ‘teeth cleaning kibble’ or dental sticks you may be in for an expensive surprise later on in his life.

So you can see why it’s important to make a start.

The good news is, it’s never too late to make a difference! And if getting your chi to accept brushing is going to take time, there are a host of simple diet and lifestyle hacks that can get the process underway immediately.
