If your chihuahua is barking, lunging, or pulling towards other dogs on walks, you are not alone.

This is one of the most common behaviour issues I help owners with, and the good news is this:

It can absolutely be improved.

Many people worry that their dog is being aggressive.

In reality, what we often call chihuahua reactivity is usually a dog responding to worry, excitement, frustration, or overwhelm.

Your dog sees another dog.

Their arousal goes up.

Their body moves into fight or flight.

Then comes the important part — prediction.

Your dog is trying to work out what the presence of that dog means for them.

If they feel uncertain or worried, barking and lunging become a way of creating distance.

In simple terms, they are saying:

“Please stay away.”

The barking itself then creates more excitement and stress, which is why the behaviour can quickly escalate.

This is why simply telling a dog to stop barking rarely works.

The issue is not stubbornness.

The issue is arousal and emotion.

The real work starts by helping your chihuahua feel calmer before they ever see the trigger and changing how they feel about other dogs over time.

If your walks are becoming stressful, it doesn’t have to stay this way
