Why tired doesn’t mean calm
In a recent article we looked at how a walk can sometimes act as a stress circuit for your chihuahua.in this article, I want to clear up a common misunderstanding about chihuahua walks: the idea that a long walk is always good because it tires your dog out and makes them calm.
Yes, a long walk will tire your dog out, but tired doesn’t necessarily mean calm.
After about 20 minutes of activity, your dog’s stress hormone, cortisol, starts to build up and can overtake testosterone. Testosterone is the hormone that helps give a dog confidence. When cortisol levels rise, things your dog was happy to ignore earlier during their chihuahua walk might suddenly feel overwhelming or even frightening.
The risks of a long chihuahua walk
There’s also the risk of physical strain. Your dog could pull a muscle during a long walk without you realising it. Dogs are hardwired not to show pain, so by the time they start limping or showing signs of discomfort, the injury has likely been there for a while.
If your dog already finds walks stressful, making them longer in the hopes of wearing them out isn’t the best solution. Long and tiring chihuahua walks, coupled with potential physical discomfort, can add to their emotional load. Think of it like an overtired child who won’t settle—one small upset, and there’s a meltdown.
Keep your chihuahua walk short and successful
It’s important to remember that what your dog experiences today shapes how they behave tomorrow. If yesterday’s chihuahua walk was too long or stressful, it could contribute to heightened anxiety.
Instead, focus on keeping chihuahua walks short and successful. If you feel the walk was too brief, you can always add in some games or training at home or in the garden. A calm, happy walk today helps create the same positive experience tomorrow.
Success builds success
Keep it simple, keep it stress-free, and your chihuahua will thank you. A well-planned approach to chihuahua walks is key to setting the tone for a happy, confident dog
